Gideon – CH Afara Godolphin

Australian Ch. Trehilyn Don’t Hold Back x Afara Zipadeedoodah

In 2018 we bred ZuZu for her second litter. I decided that I would not breed another DM At Risk dog ever again so I looked for a DM Clear stud dog to breed her to. Unfortunately, most of the champion DM Clear stud dogs in the US carry, produce or are affected by one or more inherited diseases in Pembrokes, primarily Hip Dysplasia and PDAs. I have spent decades keeping my dogs clear of inherited diseases and don’t want to sacrifice that long hard work for the DM single gene so the choice of studs was very limited. Luckily an Australian champion dog was imported who was tested clear of and had not produced any inherited diseases – Australian Ch. Trehilyn Don’t Hold Back “Torrin” – so we bred ZuZu to him. Thank you to his owners Stephanie Hedgepath, Jane Sullivan and Denise Scott and his breeder Lois Evans for this breeding.

We kept 3 puppies out of this litter – Gideon, Griffin and Glinda. Afara Godolphin “Gideon’ was named after “The Godolphin Arabian” who was one of the founding studs of Thoroughbreds in the UK. He did not show his potential at an early age. About 8 weeks his shoulder and upper arm started to feel interesting. By 10 weeks his coordination became good enough to see his big smooth sidegait. The rest of him didn’t come together until 12 weeks then he promptly went into “Puppy Uglies” at 6 months. At 9 months he started a coat drop but of course he was entered at the Cascade Specialty. I knew Kara Janiszak was coming out to the specialty and had asked her to handle Gideon. I vacillated on whether I should pull Gideon or not – Kara was very sweet and said that it would be good training for him so I drove him over to the specialty the evening before. Chris had difficulty the morning of the specialty so I got a late start and was just off the ferry when Kara called and told me Gideon had just won Best in Sweepstakes under John Wilcox (Jareaux)!!! I was so shocked I almost ran into the car ahead of me. It took another hour to get to the specialty and when I got there Kara informed me Gideon had just won Winners Dog under Larry Adams (Gaylord)!!
